coupling

A coupling is an important component used in the vehicles that play an important role in transmitting power efficiently between the shafts. The main purpose of a coupling is to keep rotational movements a smoother one while driving a vehicle. In fact, it provides methods for connecting two shafts together thereby helping to obtain optimal results. Another thing is that it gives ways for compensating misalignment between the driving and driven element by addressing essential needs.

Couplings are the mechanical parts that contribute more to connect the shafts when they are on a straight line. They even give ways for ensuring high protection against overloads to minimize unwanted issues. In addition, a coupling shows ways for preventing the heat transfer of motor to a large extent.

Types of couplings:

1.Flexible coupling

A flexible coupling is mainly meant for accommodating misalignment by compensating the temperature changes. Furthermore, it makes feasible ways for absorbing friction and vibrations by adding certain amount of flexibility. Flanged pin bush couplings, elastomeric couplings, mechanically flexible couplings, metallic membrane couplings, Tire couplings, and Oldham couplings are some types of flexible couplings available in the markets which exactly suit the vehicle applications. Most of them don’t use lubrication while coupling two pieces of rotating equipment.

2.Gear coupling

A gear coupling comes with misalignment capabilities by transmitting high torque. It is an ideal one for heavy-duty applications and generally requires lubrication. Moreover, the component gives ways for attaching two shafts at their ends properly which help to experience the desired outcomes. In addition, it has two thick hubs which serve as external gear teeth. The gear couplings are normally available with flange and continuous sleeve variations. They are primarily meant for limiting the angular misalignments significantly to reduce potential threats.

3.Disc coupling

A disc coupling is a suitable one for transmitting torque while accommodating shaft misalignment in a vehicle. It can handle the speed up to 8500 RPM by single or double discs. The single disc set couplings consist of two hubs with a single or multi-disc sets. However, a double-disc set coupling comes with additional center spaces which help to sandwich two-disc sets. It is a perfect choice for parallel misalignment with limited designs.

4.Diaphragm coupling

A diaphragm coupling is mainly used for high torque and high applications with a single or series of plates. The component allows angular, parallel and high axial misalignments by transmitting torque to outer diameter that is relative to inner diameter.
